Cannibalism: Dead or Alive!?
Cannibals are seen as psychotic individuals, that the rest of society believe as wrong doers. Socially and morally the modern world see this as evil, disrespectful acts of doing. Through out history there has been many rumors, books, and documented records of human cannibalism. where it originated from is the Caribs, a West Indies tribe that formerly practiced cannibalism. Cannibalism is translated from Spanish for from CanĂbales, the given name for the Caribs, more specifically the people who lived there known as Lesser Antilles. In some societies, especially tribal ones, cannibalism is expected and accepted. The tribes believed to obtain personalities, strength, or powers from the fallen foe's or brethren! Other tribes that practiced it believe to help the spirit or soul reach the other side in the after life. Cannibalism is still practiced in the modern day era. While most of the world does't practice cannibalism, they ban it. In War World ll many instances of cannibalism rose and became an issue in 1941-42 during which they formed a special team to combat cannibalism. The issue at hand other than social unacceptability is kuru. Kuru is a prion disease that is an incurable degenerative neurological disorder. The term "kuru" derives from the Fore word "kuria/guria" to shake. While practicing cannibalism is taboo, writing about it is not. In the novel Red Dragon written by Thomas Harris, Hannibal Lecter is a fictional character and main antagonist in the series. Hannibal's occupation is forensic psychiatrist and cannibalistic serial killer. great combination if you ask me. The book was later adopted into a film. In one scene shows Dr. Lecter biting off an officers nose and eating it (suggested seeing as the nose never appeared again at the scene.) Scientist found evidence of Homo Antecessor practicing extensive cannibalism dating back up too 600,000 years ago. They deduced this by "reading" de-fleshed human bones they found in Ethiopia. In conclusion cannibalism and cannibals will always be around as a rumor, or in literature, or culture.
